Al Nygard is CEO of MHA Nation. Previously he was the President of Al Nygard Consulting (ANC), which is a Native American owned Management Consulting firm that specializes in culturally sensitive approaches to management, planning, and development. They are highly skilled in providing community empowerment/development services; particularly to Native American communities. ANC has developed a process, The Art of the Native View, which empowers Native communities toward action and reducing the damaging effects of poverty with remarkable results. They are one of the Nation’s experts in this work. ANC received the Excellence in Community Development Programming award from the National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals for their landmark work with Native communities. In addition, they conduct external evaluations, feasibility studies, needs assessments, and market studies. Direct client services include management and leadership training, facilitation, strategic planning, preparing development plans, and providing project management services.
ANC has worked with and or consulted to over one hundred Tribal or Native concerns located on eighteen reservations in eight states in the US and four countries abroad. Mr. Nygard has worked extensively with tribes in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming and Washington, and consulted to organizations working with Indigenous populations in Australia, Canada, India, and Ecuador. He has provided presentations on reservation based strategies to reduce poverty and increase Tribal community and economic empowerment in Utah, Minnesota, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Nebraska, Washington, New Mexico, Florida, California and Montana. He is one of 25 individuals worldwide selected to consult on Building Sustainable Regional Communities at Kensington Palace in London, England.
Al is an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of Fort Berthold. He is a thirteen year veteran of the U.S. Army retiring at the rank of Major with service in Desert Storm. He served as the Director of Native American Programs at the ND Department of Commerce (formerly the ND Department of Economic Development & Finance) and served as the Special Assistant to the Director for the ND Housing Finance Agency before founding ANC. Al sits on the boards of Empowerment First, the Northern Plains Initiative, the ND Economic Security & Prosperity Alliance, the ND Economic Policy Project, and Rural Dynamics, Inc. He is also an adjunct professor of Native Community Development and Strategic Management at Sitting Bull College. Al is a guest lecturer for Sitting Bull College, South Dakota State University, and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He is a graduate of the University of Mary.
